How to get the most out of your metal roof

May 11, 2018HorizonlineAdminRoofing Adelaide1 comment

A metal roof that has been professionally installed by a manufacturer approved installer can theoretically last up to fifty years and require less maintenance and repairs than the typical tiled roof. Horizonline Roofing Adelaide have a wealth of experience repairing, cleaning and maintaining metal roof structures, so we have put together a cheat sheet of sorts on ways to prolong the life of your metal roof.

Check Ups

Making regular checks of your roof space can help prolong its life. You can do this simply by glancing up to see that no leaves or debris are stuck on the roof structure and that the guttering is clear. Most metal roof structures are easily maintained by simply hosing the roof in the drier months, and rain water will generally keep it clean the rest of the year.  If you are in an area that experiences weather extremes, it is always a good idea to check for damage, especially those in cyclone or storm prone areas.

Annual check-ups by professionals can also ensure your roof stays in tip top shape, for many years to come.

Other Metal

Metals corrode in water and the chance of corrosion increase significantly if two different types of metal are in contact with each other. This is a good reason to make sure your guttering and roof are the same metal to try and prevent corrosion. It is important to make sure if you do have different metal types on your roof, that they are separate.

When working on your roof, whether it be repairs or maintenance, make sure you are using the same materials already used in your roof. Metals have chemical reactions to each other and in heat, these reactions can accelerate corrosion.

Repairs

When completing your regular check-ups from the ground, if you notice any sheets that appear damaged, its time to contact the installer or your local roofing experts Horizonline Roofing. We can tell you how superficial or substantial the damage is and recommend whether you will need to replace the sheet. The sooner you can have your damaged sheet looked at by a professional, the less risk of damage to the structure of the home.

Scratches, unless they compromise the strength of the sheet are ok to be left alone. Resist the urge to spray paint the scratch as it can lead to the surrounding areas being overpainted and you will still have a patch of paint that is not the same as the sheets around it.

Safety First!

You may be tempted to simply line up the ladder and climb up onto the roof to check for maintenance issues. You need to be mindful of any safety requirements and guidelines, not to mention working at heights safety provisions. Most roofs can be inspected from the ground and gutters can be cleaned without getting onto the roof itself. Sometimes it’s best to leave the heights work to the professionals with the appropriate licences, training and safety equipment.

If you do have to get on the roof, for whatever reason, it is recommended you wear soft rubber sole shoes and consider the manufacturers advice as to appropriate places to stand on the roof so you do not damage the formation of the sheets. If in doubt as to whether you should walk on the roof, it’s safer just to leave it to the professionals at Horizonline Roofing Adelaide.
